Directory submission is an easy way to build links to your website. You can use the following lists of free site directories to build your backlinks.
There are 3 different lists:
- General Directories
- Local Business Directories
- Blog Directories
You should also submit your site to niche directories which for obvious reasons I cannot list here, but I do have a post on how to find them and build links with directories you can follow.
General Web Directories
All of these directories are:
- Free to submit to
- Do NOT require a reciprocal link
- Have PR 4+ on homepage
I’m only including working high PR directories in an effort to provide sites that will give you worthwhile links. That being said, these still aren’t really high quality links because they are from general directories.
Regardless, they’re free and take about 30-60 seconds per link when done manually. There are 70 directories in total.
[UPDATED July 27, 2012]
All directories are linked to their submission page (when possible)
Local Business Directories
Local business directories link out to business based on their geographic location.
These don’t apply for many webmasters as they are only for local businesses. If you have a brick and mortar store then you should get your site listed in these high PR directories ASAP. You might have a hard time with just a click-and-mortar (web-based) business.
If you’re a blogger then just skip over these.
If you run a blog then these are easy links.
Here’s a list of high PR blog directories, once again listed in order of PR with the names linked to the submission pages (when possible), and also whether or not they require payment for inclusion.

One last thing, just in case you haven’t heard of them, here are the 3 most popular web directories:
Dmoz is free and strictly reviewed, while the other two are quite expensive, so take your time before deciding to submit.
