How Many Keywords to Target?
Posted by Ben Sibley on Jul 18, 2011 | 7 commentsWondering how many keywords to target for your site? For your website, you can target as many keywords as you’d like. Many internet marketers and SEOs get too caught up targeting their home page. We’ve seen it too many times, the EMD (exact match domain) with some 4 word long-tail keyword in the domain name with all of the links pointing at the home page. The truth is that you do not need to have your keyword in your domain, and every single web page on your site can and should target a different keyword. This is actually one reason it’s more worthwhile to build an authority site in one niche then a bunch of small sniper sites in one niche or across a few niches.
I do practice what I preach, and aside from a few non-optimized pages on the site, every single page on this site is targeting a keyword with a small or large amount of search traffic. Yes, I also target a competitive term with the homepage, but there’s no reason why each other page cannot or should target an entirely new phrase. The reason why this is actually very effective is because every new page you build automatically has strong internal links from your site. For example, at the time of writing this, my site’s homepage has a PR of 3 and many internal links with PR 1 and PR 2. When I add a new post, all of this authority is automatically being passed to it. This makes every link I build to my site more worthwhile – each link will have some effect on many pages on my site.
How many keywords you target per page is up to you, but you should take it one at a time. If you wanted to rank for “free fishing ebook” and “fishing ebook” for example, you would end up with a decent rank for both no matter which phrase you chose to target because the terms are so similar. Let’s say you did your backlinking for “free fishing ebook”, keep building links until you’re #1 for that keyword before targeting on any other. Why? Because there is a huge jump in traffic between being the first result and being the second. It is easy to grow bored or weary of trying to rank for the same term after an extended period of time, but it really is best to target one keyword at a time.
The amount of keywords you can rank for is endless, and it just gets easier if you are growing an authority site. Sticking to one keyword per page is a great model for grabbing tons of rankings and traffic, and it is also a fantastic strategy for improving your deep link ratio. Hopefully this has your answered your question of How Many Keywords??

Thanks for addressing this! I am relatively new to IM and I have struggled with keywords….how to pick, how many, acceptable competition level, etc. So feel free to post more on this (hint!).
Danny recently posted..KL Industries Water Quest Fishing Boats
Lol thanks Danny, I’ll keep that in mind. I just updated the keyword research page with a video on gauging competition – you might find this helpful
Thank you, Ben. Helpful as usual. Quality keywords sure are better than having a bunch of low impact keywords, and having a combination of regular keywords and long-tail keywords will definitely have better results for us.
